Candidate Filing for 2024 Elections Begins Dec. 4
Candidate filing for most contests in the 2024 elections begins at noon on Monday, Dec. 4, 2023, and ends at noon on Friday, Dec. 15, 2023.
Depending on the office sought, candidates will file their Notice of Candidacy and pay their filing feeseither at their county board of elections office or with the State Board of Elections at the N.C. State Fairgrounds in Raleigh
Voter Registration Deadline
Here are the voter registration deadlines for the 2024 elections in North Carolina:
- Feb. 9, 2024, for the primary election on March 5, 2024.
- Oct. 11, 2024, for the general election on Nov. 5, 2024.
Online or in person at the DMV:
- Use N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) services. Existing DMV customers may submit a voter registration application online.

- Note: Certain agencies, including the DMV, are required to offer voter registration services.
Dates and Deadlines
Here are voter dates and deadlines for the 2024 primary election in North Carolina:
- Jan. 19, 2024: County boards of elections begin mailing absentee ballots to eligible voters who submitted an absentee ballot request form.
- Feb. 9, 2024: Voter registration deadline (5 p.m.).*
- Feb. 15, 2024: In-person early voting begins.
- Feb. 27, 2024: Absentee ballot request deadline (5 p.m.).*
- March 2, 2024: In-person early voting ends (3 p.m.).
- March 5, 2024: Primary Election Day.
- March 5, 2024: Absentee ballot return deadline (7:30 p.m.).*
